Good tranlation, pity about the study guide... - The NAB is an excellent translation, but I agree wholeheartedly with the reviewer from Florida, with regard to the study guide analysis of John 6 - The Bread of Life Discourse. The guide takes a thoroughly Anti-Catholic stance on this, and states that the Eucharist is merely a symbol. How the book can call itself a Catholic bible is beyond me...But the translation is excellent, so perhaps you could ignore the dubious parts of the study guide, and make use of the rest...The notes at the foot of every page are useful however.
A bad translation with a bad agenda. - I own many Catholic Bibles and this is one which certainly does not live up to it s name. Beginning with the spurious New American Bible version, including the controversial inclusive language, it then goes on to take a decidedly un-Catholic perspective in it s study guides. It is a very attractive book, with copious guides and helps, which makes it seem like a good buy. It also benefits from being the only study Bible available with the name Catholic. But, once inside, many liberal and non-Catholic views are expressed. In reference to John 6, we find the Eucharist called a symbol, and a denial of the Real Presence. I would warn any Catholic or aspiring Catholic to steer clear of this version, and go with a more solid translation such as the Ignatius Bible or the Douay-Rheims. These do not contain study guides, but at least refrain from attacks on the teaching of the Church.
Rates excellent in readability and annotation. - I am in the process of becoming a Catholic, and I want to read, and study, the Bible - particularly the Catholic version, which includes more books in the Old Testament than the Protestant versions. I appreciate that this is a translation from the original Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek, rather than a paraphrase or modernization of previous translations. It includes a fair amount of clear commentary by theologians and biblical scholars, including reading guides for each book. I find the comments on history and culture help make the text understandable. Footnotes are included at the page bottoms, eliminating the distraction of constantly flipping back and forth. For those, like me, in bifocals, the typeface is slightly larger than many editions I ve seen, adding to readability. I recommend this version to any serious bible student.
I ve learned so much from this Bible! - I received this Bible during my conversion to Catholicism. Since I wasn t raised Catholic, I was somewhat skeptical towards the beliefs of the Catholic Church. However, I was drawn to the historic and intellectual interpretations of this study Bible which differed greatly from the more literal interpretations my protestant/agnostic upbringing held. To approach the Bible in this way allowed me to understand the conditions under which early Christians lived and solidified my understanding of Jesus teachings.
